What is OLED?

  • Types of OLED Displays
    OLED displays can be classified into PMOLED and AMOLED, depending on the backplane (drive substrate) on which the OLED device is formed and the driving method.
    The PMOLED method does not have transistors on the substrate and uses line sequential drive to draw the screen. It is not suitable for large screens and high resolution due to duty operation however its simple structure makes it relatively inexpensive to produce, making it suitable for small custom displays.
    AMOLED, which uses a TFT substrate as a backplane, is used for medium to large-sized, high-definition applications such as TVs, smartphones, and tablets because it is less limited in size and resolution. Due to its complexity of the manufacturing process, models are developed on the assumption of large quantities.

  • Succeeded in mass production of OLED
    for the first time in the world
    In 1997, we were the first company in the world* to successfully mass produce OLEDs. Since then, we have continued our R&D to develop, manufacture and market OLED devices that match the needs of the times.
    *The Pioneer Group focused on research into OLEDs with a thin-film multilayer structure, which was demonstrated by C.W. Tang et al. of Kodak in 1987, and started development for mass production. In 1997, we (the former Yonezawa Plant of Tohoku Pioneer Corporation) succeeded in mass-producing OLED displays for the first time in the world.

    Since the start of OLED mass production, we have supplied OLEDs in Japan and overseas.
    The cumulative number of panels shipped is close to 200 million units*, and the number of companies to which we have supplied OLEDs is about 100*.We will continue to provide reliable OLEDs made in Japan.

In addition, we also offer state-of-the-art displays such as transmissive (transparent), ultra-thin, in-cell touch, narrow bezel, and special shapes, as well as light source units that make full use of optical technology.

    We have started offering "Display System Integration Services". In addition to manufacturing and sales of PMOLED devices, which has been our main business, we also offer contract services such as modularization of various displays, development and design of drive and control software, and assembly of display-mounted units.
